On Wednesday, March 18. The USCIS website posted an announcement of the closure of the agency to slow down the spread of the Coronavirus. According to the announcement, routine in-person services such as naturalization services, asylum interviews, and visa or work permit renewals will be suspended until April 7.

This shutdown could affect thousands of legal workers that may violate their deadlines for either a visa or a work permit. The agency has yet to address those issues for the ones affected by the shutdown.

According to a report by CNN the decision to shut down came after the union representing USCIS employees called on the agency to cease in-person services due to growing coronavirus pandemic.

Employees for the agency will still work remotely on services that do not require any face to face contact with the public. For any updates regarding the closure of the USCIS agency visit the department's website.
